Even after twenty years of
residence, and literally thousands of other images added
to that odd assembly on the train platform, I still find my
general impression subject to subtle changes for I am
still making new discoveries, large and small, about this
complex, multifaceted kingdom. Perhaps that is why so
many visitors feel an urge to come back, again and
again: looking for yet more pieces of a vast jigsaw puzzle
which somehow never seems quite complete.
The present book consists of two sets of images, one
in words and the other in pictures, culled from two
separate impressions of Thailand. The word ' 'separate"
must be stressed; for besides the obvious disparity of the
. two mediums (one picture may or may not be worth a
thousand words, but it certainly invites a different
response), no two people ever have the same impression
of a place. Thus, while I considered trying to correlate
the text with the photographs, I decided against it,
choosing instead to let the two views remain independent.
Dean Barrett's Thailand is visual, selected from im-
ages he has captured on film during many journeys to
various parts of the country. My own is drawn from
memories extending over two decades, plus a smattering of
history and other factual information I think
might illuminate certain points.

We also offer a series of articles about the traditional culture of
Thailand.

Traditional Thailand is a collection of 29
traditional occupations and skills in Thailand, all of them typical in one way
or another of the Thai way of life. For a variety of reasons-such as
modernization-many of these lifestyles are disappearing. Traditional Thailand
offers glimpses into some of the
traditional activities of Asia's most fascinating country.
