Why is total hip replacement surgery necessary?
Age, injury or disease can cause hip joints to "wear out”" When
their hips "wear out" many people have pain that limits their ability
to walk, climb stairs, and do activities they enjoy. If this happens
to you, a total hip replacement surgery is one option you should
consider. This surgery can relieve the pain so that you can again take
part in the activities you enjoy.
The normal Hip
The hip joint is a ball and socket joint. The ball is formed by the
head of the thigh bone (femur)
The socket is part of the pelvis called the
acetabulum. In a normal hip, the ball and socket are covered with
a smooth layer of tissue called cartilage. The
cartilage allows the ball to glide easily inside the socket and
cushions your hip joint. Muscles and
ligaments hold your hip joint in place. When the surrounding
muscles support your weight and the joint moves smoothly, you can walk
without pain.
The problem Hip
In the problem hip, worn cartilage no longer serves as a cushion.
Age, injury or disease can wear away the cartilage. As the cartilage
wears away from the bones, the bones rub together creating rough
surfaces like sandpaper on the bones. When you move your leg, the
rough ball grinds in the socket causing pain and stiffness. As the
pain worsens you avoid using the joint, causing the muscles to weaken.
As your muscles weaken, your hip joint is less able to support your
body weight and it feels unstable.
The new Hip
Total hip replacement surgery removes damaged bone and cartilage
from the hip joint and replaces both the bone and cartilage with an
artificial joint (prosthesis).
An artificial ball connected to a stem replaces the ball of your
thighbone. An artificial cup, shaped like a bowl, replaces the worn
socket. These parts connect to create a new artificial hip that works
almost exactly like your own hip joint. All parts have smooth surfaces
for comfortable movement once you have healed from surgery.
The prosthesis is made of wear-resistant plastic called polyethylene
and metal (titanium or stainless steel). The artificial ball and
socket are held in place by a special bone cement, by your bone
growing into the prosthesis, or a combination of both. Your doctor
