Some twenty years
ago, when I was in the pleasant
process of first discovering Thailand, I took the over-
night express train from Bangkok to Chiang Mai, in the
far north. There were no air-conditioned sleepers in
those days, and while the elegant, teak-paneled compartment
of the first-class section held a certain
nostalgic charm for railroad buffs like myself, they also
presented very definite problems of ventilation. If you
opened the screened but closely slatted windows you
could breathe and look out, but you were joined at every
stop by awesome swarms of flying creatures, ranging
from flies and mosquitoes to some of the biggest beetles
I ever saw. On the other hand, if you kept them closed
you risked slow suffocation in spite of the efforts of a
wheezing little fan that sounded like a death rattle.
After weighing these alternatives I chose the latter
and lay damp and sleepless on the slippery leather bunk
for most of the night; which is how I happened to be
wide awake when the train pulled into a certain station
in the very early hours of the morning. I cannot
remember exactly what station it was; it might have
been Nakom Sawan, or Uttaradit, both major stops on
the northern line; but I will never forget my surprise at
hearing, instead of the customary muffled station
noises, the stirring and very loud sound of a military
band.
When I opened my window a crack and peeped out, the sight was even
stranger. There was indeed a band,
standing on the platform only a few yards away; the members were
dressed in smart white-and-gold uniforms, complete with fancy caps,
and they were enthusiastically
thumping out' 'Colonel Bogey's March,'' just as though they were on a
parade ground at high
noon. Equally remarkable, standing in front of them were six or seven
extraordinarily beautiful girls, dressed in brilliant brocaded Thai
silk costumes that shimmered alluringly in the wan lights of the drab
station.
While I was still trying to collect my wits a whistle blew, the train
suddenly jerked into motion, and the surrealistic scene was abruptly
gone, lost forever in the
swift flowing darkness.
No doubt there was a perfectly simple explanation,
some arriving or departing dignitary. I never discovered
what it was: my Thai was unequal to the task of quizzing
the conductor, and besides, the next morning it
seemed more like a dream. But the image of that bizarre,
pre-dawn gathering has remained clear in my memory
over all the years since, fixed like a photograph in a very
personal album labeled "Thailand."
